Admission of students to universities in Sri Lanka is done by the University Grants Commission on the basis of average Z scores obtained by candidates at the G.C.E (A/L) examination.
The University Grants Commission selects students for admission to following undergraduate courses of study at University of Ruhuna for every academic year.

Presently, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences reserve about 05 places for students who are medically certified as disabled in every admission year. The number of students to be admitted in each year will be decided by the faculties based on available facilities.
Up to 0.5% of the places from the proposed intake of each course of study is reserved for candidates who have obtained only 1st, 2nd or 3rd places at national level and/ or achievements at international levels in the fields such as sports, cultural activities (e.g. dancing, painting, music and literature), scouting and cadetting, social work and other extracurricular activities during the specific period decided by the UGC.
Up to 0.5 percent of the proposed intake of Medicine and Engineering of the University is reserved for the personnel enlisted in the Armed Forces, Police Service and the Special Task Force serving in operational areas.
Up to 0.5 percent of the places from the proposed intake of Medicine and Engineering of the University is reserved for the Sri Lankan students who have obtained qualifications abroad and foreign students. Accordingly, candidates with impressive results at a foreign examination held outside Sri Lanka deemed equivalent to G.C.E (A/L) examination of Sri Lanka are eligible to apply through the UGC.
Faculty of Science and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences may admit a limited number of teachers each year to courses of study in Biological Science/ Physical Science and Arts under following categories:
The Faculty of Agriculture calls applications from the diploma holders in Agriculture to follow the B.Sc. Agricultural Resource Management and Technology Degree Programme under the approval of University Grants Commission. Employees in the agricultural field in government and private sector organizations who possess the following qualifications are eligible to sit for the admission test.
A two year Diploma in Agriculture or Animal Production from any School of Agriculture of the Department of Agriculture, Aquinas University College, Hardy Institute of Technical Training, Affiliated University College or any other recognized institution approved by the Ministry of Higher Education or University Grants Commission.
OR
A two year Diploma from National College of Education with Agriculture as the main subject with G.C.E. (O/L) New or NCGE (Six passes in one sitting, with four credit passes including Science and Mathematics) and G.C.E.(A/L) (At least three passes in one sitting of the following subjects: Botany, Chemistry, Zoology, Biology, Physics, Mathematics(Pure/Applied), and Agriculture.)
Five years (05) of experience (on the closing date of application) as a permanent employee in the government or private sector, in the field of Agriculture/Animal Production or related sectors, after obtaining the Diploma in Agriculture.
Should be below 40 years of age, on the closing date of application
The University of Ruhuna admit number of students with foreign qualification under the Government of Sri Lanka Presidential Scholarships Program. Foreign students who have obtained foreign qualifications equivalent to GCE (A/L) examination of Sri Lanka are eligible to apply through the Ministry of Higher Education and Highways.
The selection of students will be done by the respective Faculty Boards based on the applications recommended by the University Grants Commission.
