University Grants Commission selects students who satisfy the eligibility criteria to receive the Mahapola scholarships in every admission year.
Mahapola scholarships are awarded in two different basis namely merit scholarships and ordinary scholarships. Merit scholarships are awarded to the students who have scored highest marks at G.C.E. A/L examination and ordinary scholarships are awarded to the students from families of lower income levels.10% of the total number of scholarships will be awarded on merit basis and balance 90% will be ordinary scholarships.
Payments are made in 10 installments per academic year and a student receives a sum of Rs.5050/- or Rs.5000/- per installment as merit or ordinary scholarship.
The eligibility to receive the installment is aligned with the recommendation of the Deans in each faculty. Installment will be directly credited to the students’ account by Mahapola Trust Fund. Student can maintain a bank account from any bank in Sri Lanka.

According to the payment criteria, termination or cancellation of scholarship installments shall be based on the following matters.
- Every scholarship recipient must engage in the relevant studies and 80% attendance is compulsory. If not, payments would not be recommended.
- In case the students’ studies have been suspended on the following grounds, payment of their scholarship installments would not be recommended based on the following matters.
- Banning from lectures on anti-disciplinary activities.
- Damaging University property and giving punishment on it.
- Punishment on ragging.
- Engage in offensive acts and being punished.
